First Lesson: What you've learned

What you've learned

You finished the First Lesson. Here is what you learned.

  • Names and letters We gave the pet cup and the blocks names, and a letter to write for each.
  • Measurement A quantity and a unit together, like 3 blocks. A number without a unit has no meaning.
  • + for and In the language of math, we write + where we would say and.
  • Make it Balance Making the two sides equal is the first principle in algebra.
  • Equations We wrote down what we saw on the scale as an equality, then guessed what was in the cup.
  • Getting it by itself Taking the same from both sides keeps the scale balanced, until the cup is by itself and we can read what it holds.
